Day 17 : Ring around the Roadsie

[Written by mary, edited and published by brian]

As our trip is winding down, we have inked the (entire) last leg of our trip, in part because there appears to be SOMETHING happening in the east of Ireland (filling up hotels and driving up prices). Brian spent a frustrating couple of hours last night trying to book a place somewhere halfway between us and Dublin but no luck, all sold out (and/or priced up). Add to that a terrible time finding us lodgings the last 2 nights near Dublin Airport. Again mostly sold out, of course, except for the dear ones (pricy), so we’re going first class for the last 2 nights. Of course, we had originally planned for and paid for rooms for our final night(s), but Ethiopian Airlines decided to cancel our flight, forcing us into rescheduling hell.

Such is the way of the Laissez-faire style vacation.

Regardless, we had a couple of days to kill before heading off to Dublin for the trip home and since we knew of and and have (very) fond memories of a specific Pub B & B in Kenmare – that was our Vector (Victor) – we’re off to the west coast.

The result is we are here at O’Donnabhains Townhouse (B’nB over a pub) in Kenmore; been here before, loved it then and still.

But I get ahead of me’self, as on the way the Navi-Gator (me) noticed a side-trip so…of course we strayed. Here we have what Brian will go through for a picture and the result of said effort.

Back on the road, the drive from Blarney to Kenmare was short, so decided to drive the Legendary and ObligatoryRing of Kerry“.

Ring of Kerry

I did it in 1999 with me ma. Still an enjoyable ride, at least for me as the passenger. The Ring of Kerry gives one all landscapes of the Irish countryside; from the desolate rocky Burren like, to the quillwork rock walls separating farms, to the lush forrest, and the ocean; one gets it all. And we were blessed with a sunny day. If one takes a pre-arranged tour of Ireland this is likely to be on the tour and for good reason.

At the terminus, we were faced with a choice…and as usual, we took the path NEVER travelled by a tourist (or a person with the sense God gave to a horse) to get back to Kenmare. Continue on for a glimpse of what we encountered…

Starting with cows on the road

To Sheeps on the road

To not much road at all (notice the high green grass down the middle)

Life’s an adventure, and too short to take the paved roads.

Back in Kenmare at the Pub, time for dinner and drinks. Lamb stew for me, seafood casserole for Brian

And of course since it’s C-O-L-D out, a fire next to our table.

G’nite all.
