St Vincent de Paul Spiritual Reflection November 2017

November 2017

First letter of St. Paul (Rom 14:6-9)

Whoever observes the day, observes it for the Lord.
Also whoever eats, eats for the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while whoever abstains, abstains for the Lord and gives thanks to God.

None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself.

For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

For this is why Christ died and came to life,
that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

Vincentian Reflection

The last time we shared a reflection it was August, it was hot, and we spent considerable time talking about a possible pantry remodel.

Today we’re deep into November, it’s not hot and the pantry is remodeled…at least so that the pantry masters can tweak it to their preferences.

The Gospels speak not much of weather, or holidays, or even of practical matters such as pantries, budgets or fund raising. Rather, the Gospels constantly speak of movement, learning, and growth as the apostles follow Christ on his glorious spiritual journey. A journey he undertook for each one of us.

And just as Jesus shared his journey with the apostles and therefore all of us, we too should and are sharing in our journeys together. Tonight we journey together for some practical matters, and it is good that we do so – since the fruits of this time and effort are The Lord’s gifts delivered to those we serve.

But I propose that as we navigate the practical sequence of tonight we also remember our true purpose here…to keep moving closer to The Lord, to keep learning how God loves us, and to grow in our Love, Devotion and Service to Him.
