St Vincent de Paul Spiritual Reflection December 2018

December 2018

Titus (Titus 3:4-7)

 Beloved:
When the kindness and generous love
of God our savior appeared,

not because of any righteous deeds we had done
but because of his mercy,

He saved us through the bath of rebirth
and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
whom he richly poured out on us
through Jesus Christ our savior,

so that we might be justified by his grace
and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

Vincentian Reflection

Greetings and good cheer to all.

So the agenda says it is time for a Christmas reflection. Sounds a bit like something that comes with a Pass/Fail grade in seminary school to me, but here we go…

It can be said that we live in a time of great chaos, especially moral chaos.

We’re surrounded by so much chaos – political divisions blinded by spiteful intentions, remedies for real environmental concerns suppressed by selfishness, senseless disregard for the value of human life everywhere, and I should include a mother church that at times seems fixated on self-destruction.

As catholic Christians, we can avoid allowing these and all other temporal objectives to define us. Instead, we can calmly rise above this chaos and show by our grace that we are instead defined and driven by how well we love and serve God’s plan.

In other words, we live today in the here and now but we live for the the life to come.

So tonight we celebrate much that is good. Not the least of this would be our chapters accomplishments of service for the past year and the bright prospects to serve even more in the coming year.

But most importantly, while the chaos swirls we are warmed and strengthened by the Christmas promise. God said one day he’d restore us and the birth of the Christ Child is the beginning of the fulfillment for that promise.

The Comfort and Joy brought to us by the birth of Jesus is a peace I’ll happily accept and share as best I can.
