St Vincent de Paul Spiritual Reflection November 2018

September 2018

Corinthians: (COR 1:3-9)

 Brothers and sisters:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always on your account
for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus,

that in him you were enriched in every way,
with all discourse and all knowledge,
as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you,
so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift
as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He will keep you firm to the end,
irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 God is faithful,
and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

Vincentian Reflection

I had developed what I thought was an acceptable seed and framework for tonight’s reflection. Yet for two days I’ve been unable to develop the thesis into a meaningful reflection.

So instead, I’ve reworked the reflection from last year. I suppose November 2015 or 2016 might have been preferable from not having been heard in two or three years, but oh well.

The Gospels speak not much of weather, or calamities such as firestorms devastating wide swaths of civilization. Even practical matters such as agendas, fundraising and obligatory reporting are omitted.

Rather, the Gospels constantly speak of learning, learning Christ’s message of peace and love; of movement, movement towards a life closer to God the Father; of growth, growth in the ways and we serve our Lord.

And just as Jesus shared his journey with the apostles and therefore all of us, we too should and are sharing in our journey together. Tonight we journey together for some practical matters, and it is good that we do so – since the fruits of this time and effort are The Lord’s gifts delivered to those we serve.

But I propose that as we navigate the practical sequence of tonight, we also remember our true purpose here…to keep moving closer to The Lord, to keep learning how God loves us, and to grow in our Love, Devotion and Service to Him and each other.
