Day 3 : Well, that’s less than perfect

[Written by brian & editorial input from and approved by mary]

Spent the entire morning working on database stuff, oh boy. Sometime after 1:00, Lady Mary and I took off for a stroll around the other side (across the River Shannon) of Athlone, and of course, lunch. Yummy (I’m told) vegetable soup for Mary, and chorizo/bacon/shrimp/new potatoes salad for meself.

And for those who enjoy food (too much), there’s salad

Now that was good.

Back to the hotel for a nap and extended planning session. We’re extending our stay in Athlone until next week and will take shorter day trips from here to survive the next three days of pouring rain. Dublin tomorrow.

For dinner Lady Mary had many Pints and chicken (yawn) and I had seafood chowder and burger. Chowder awesome, burger (yawn) was a burger.

Like I said, tomorrow is Dublin. I’m calling it the substance abuse tour, as we’ll be going to the Guinness Storehouse,  the Teeling Whiskey Distillery and the Jamesons Bow Street Distillery. If you know me you know we’ll fit lunch in, somehow.

As a footnote, Lady Mary this morning sent me to the Ireland version of a 7-11/AM-PM store for a “Breakfast/Granola Bar”. After three full trips around this 500 sq ft store (complete with hot food buffet) and only seeing chocolate (eg snickers) bars, it dawns on me (no pun intended) she’s sent me to the store for a breakfast bar IN THE LAND OF FULL BREAKFASTS. Irish breakfast includes yogurt, toast, eggs, pudding (aka blood sausage), bangers (sausage), bacon (ham), steamed tomatoes and much, much more. Breakfast bar? I might as well could have been shopping for top shelf tequila in Iran. Got a freshly baked french bread mini-loaf for a Euro (~1.25 usd) and called it a “Breakfast Bar”

Off with you now, the pubs are calling us…

    1. they are! for some reason, the Irish know how to fry a potato, without it being greasy, and yet cooked throughout. {Mary}

      All the potato, not just the fries are cooked the way God intended – thoroughly and not crunchy! You are brilliant for noticing and Yes, those are “chips” around here. {Brian}

  1. Ok so that salad looks BITCHEN (I’ve decided to bring that word back)!! I’m suspect of Mary’s lunch as that’s not the butter she uses for our St. Patty’s Day extravaganza. She told me Kilgannon is the best, so wth? She does get extra points for the multitude of pints consumed however!
