St Vincent de Paul Spiritual Reflection March 2018

March 2018

Romans (Rom 12:1-3)

I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship.

Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than one ought to think, but to think soberly, each according to the measure of faith that God has apportioned.

Vincentian Reflection

What a wonderful few days or weeks we find ourselves in at this moment. Not only did we just celebrate another Saint Patrick’s day, and not only is today the Spring Equinox, but Palm Sunday is upon us in five days.

With all that and more, I needed to remind at least myself and perhaps even a few others…we’re still in Lent; literally the opposite of “ordinary time”.

We all know the duration of Lent is set to emulate and remind us of the forty days Christ spent fasting in the desert in preparation for his ministry.

But let’s consider St Patrick, who converted an entire country of pagans in his ministry to Ireland. Once he heard his calling, that is to return to the land which had enslaved him – Patrick first spent roughly 20+ years in Catholic France…preparing for his ministry.

Twenty years of preparation in religious and theological studies, ordained as both a deacon and priest, crowned a bishop and then released to bring salvation to Ireland.

With that example, I invite all to join me -in spirit- for the remaining 12 days or so between now and Easter. In this time I shall try to follow the examples of our Lord and that of St. Patrick and recommit to preparing for executing our ministry as best we can.
