Day 5 (Sat May 21st) Shite to start, but literally a Joy at the end…

[Spoiler alert – hint’s at some excuse for not posting regularly follow]

Woke up this morning and OK, NFW (No F’expletive Way) are we staying here another day.

To prime the thought, here’s the monster gate Brian had to climb yesterday just go get us in.

It truly was 10 to 14 feet high, this picture doesn’t show it well

But then this morning we found this, the water heater controllers for a morning shower.

The only instruction said to turn the knob halfway….

After working that/these out, it took _another_ 30 minutes to figure out to turn on the shower pump.

So many little things, come to The Oaks and we’ll have a pint if you want to hear the tale of misery.

Brian used his powers to find us a new place, and this was completely the opposite. Classy, the host lived in and OMG the view (see below) of the water cascading right outside his property was so unspeakably beautiful.

And….

That symmetrical bit to the right is a salmon ladder

Before checking in we did a drive up to the coast for a photo op to a purportedly special photo spot (Vista Point?) and then the Connemara National Park. Beauty defined.

Anyway, the coastal drive to the vista point included narrow and eventually dirt roads consistent with our intent and expectations,

Worth the effort, yes? Just beautiful

but with ¼ mile to go we got this.

Ratz

I was able to convince GoFotIt Brian to turn around, which in itself was an adventure.

Once we got to Connemara National Park we found it included a respectable waterfall

Lush under the canopy…

And the staff directed us to an even more storied (some other time) waterfall outside the park.

After this, we returned to our new Airbnb to be greeted by the host offering red or white wine. The three of us killed a bottle of red before Brian and I headed into town for dinner and pints. Dinner and pints were good, and we retreated to the restaurants sunroom overlooking Galway Bay for a bit of Jameson’s. Talked with three local ladies (mid 30’s, mid 20’s and early 20’s) just as we like. They left as a group of a dozen or so young’uns came in for a drink or two before tearing the town up.

Yes. It took a New York minute, but we became besties. Hugs and Love and lot’s o’talking. (uh, drinking). By the time they were all gone some numbers had been exchanged and offers to host any or all of them in Glendora extended. Here is the last of them before they went off to dance.dance.dance.

Total toll for the evening

Mary 1/3 bottle of wine, 2 pints Guinness, somewhere between six and nine Jameson’s, one (or was it two) shots of tequila and then (thanks Brian) one more pint of Guinness. Of course Brian hardly drank anything.

Good times but….

  1. You two are my heroes!! Wish I could drink all that and still be coherent. Or alive! 😀 Hoping you left that first Airbnb host a VERY negative review! Still can’t believe Brian climbed that gate. Very happy you’re making all those new friends over there and hope to meet them sometime when they visit your Irish American Castle. ❤

    1. Hi Norma – We’re still butting heads over not paying for the two nights we didn’t stay. But you can bet Mary and I will substitute caffeine for Guinness to sit down and write that review.

  2. You two really know how to make the most of a trip. I love hearing about your adventures, especially when mixing with the locals. What beautiful countryside and what lovely lasses in that last photo, all 5 of them.

Seeing the size of that gate has me even more impressed with Brian!

  3. I forgot to tell you, I literally laughed out loud when I read the comment “The only instruction said to turn the knob halfway….” under the photo of the water heater control. Too funny!

    1. Hi Joe. Glad you got a chuckle. As you can imagine it wasn’t a laughing point in the moment but then most impediments in life should become a laugh or one could go bonkers.
